To many people, the answer to what is the capital of India is New Delhi or simply Delhi. Though many people say either of them is the capital of India, each of them is different.

New Delhi, the capital of India is located in the north-central part of India and on the right side of river Yamuna.

The city is in the south of Delhi also known as Old Delhi. The term Delhi is used to refer to the areas the city areas close to National Capital Territory of Delhi and New Delhi the capital of the country.

Prior to Delhi was made capital of India, Calcutta (Kolkatta) was the capital. it was during days of King George 5 of England relocated the capital from Calcutta to Delhi. When the Delhi Durbar was going on, Emperor of India made the announcement that the capital is being relocated from Calcutta to Delhi.

At the same time, the foundation of the residence of the Viceroy in Coronation Park, Kingsway Camp was laid. The main part of the new capital city was planned by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, the renowned architects of the century.

The construction started in 1912 at a distance of 5km south of Delhi city center. 

And, the new capital became a completed entity in 1931. Compared to Old Delhi, the new city had great features such as spacious roads lined with trees, wide vistas whereas the Old city was full of narrow, crowded roads and streets.

New Delhi is nestled by Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh and spans over an area of 1484 square km and is the second biggest city in India.

Today, the area of the city extends beyond the National Capital Territory and covers, neighboring urban locations include Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Noida making it the second biggest urban region as per UN estimations.

What is the Climate of New Delhi like – New Delhi’s climate is monsoon type with summers being hot and humid and winters an winters and hot semiarid climate. 

There is high fluctuation in temperature and rainfall in summer and winters.

New Delhi’s location on the fault lines makes it earthquake prone. Most times the earthquake mild. In recent years in 2015, the number earthquakes increased – 5.4, 4.7 in 2007, 4.2 in 2011, 5.2 in 2012 and four times with magnitude 2.5, 2.8, 3.1 and 3.3 in 2013.
